17th Century Ningxia Rug Fragment

Period: 17th Century
Origin: Ningxia, China
Dimensiks: 138 x 218 cm

This rare 17th century Ningxia rug fragment highlights a powerful and rhythmic geometric composition featuring an intricate “T-lattice” or fretwork pattern rendered in luminous cerulean blue against a warm, undyed oatmeal field. This structural balance between the repeating labyrinthine grid and the expansive, minimalist borders reflects the pinnacle of the early Qing Dynasty imperial weaving tradition. Ningxia rugs of this antiquity are prized for their Zen-like restraint and sophisticated use of negative space, originally designed to adorn the halls of palaces and monastic temples.

The color palette is masterfully balanced featuring a primary ivory ground that serves as a dramatic canvas for the high contrast shifts of variegated indigo blue. These rich and enduring tones achieved through the expert application of natural dyes nearly four centuries ago exhibit a chromatic strength and a soft, ethereal luster that are hallmarks of the finest 17th century Chinese productions. The inclusion of a wide “meander” or Greek key border—echoing the central lattice—creates a precise visual frame that highlights the superior wool quality and distinctive technical finesse of the Ningxia master weavers.

Structural analysis indicates the use of exceptionally soft, hand-spun “pashmina-like” wool with a characteristically low clipped pile and a supple, almost fabric-like handle. The exceptional clarity of the geometric fretwork and the presence of significant tonal abrash within the blue outlines definitively distinguish this antique masterpiece from later commercial examples or 19th-century revivals. Ultimately, this Ningxia fragment stands as a premier example of classical Chinese textile art, representing a peak in both technical endurance and philosophical harmony for global collectors.
