This late 19th century Seichour rug is a magnificent example of the precise and highly decorative weaving traditions of the Northeast Caucasus. Seichour rugs, a sub group of the Kuba district, are world renowned for their detailed draftsmanship and the absence of the typical symmetrical knot, allowing for the remarkably fluid and sharp geometric designs seen here.

The composition features the iconic “Seichour Rose” or “St. Andrew’s Cross” motifs, arranged in a rhythmic all over pattern across a vibrant forest green field. These stylized floral elements are rendered with exceptional clarity, utilizing a palette of madder red, golden yellow, and ivory. The green ground is particularly rare and highly prized by collectors, as it provides a lush backdrop that makes the geometric blossoms appear to float on the surface.

The rug is framed by the signature Seichour “Running Dog” or “Sea Wave” border in a crisp blue and white, which provides a dynamic sense of motion to the overall design. This is flanked by several narrow guard stripes featuring repeating floral rosettes and geometric patterns.
