Signed Silk Hereke Rug
Period: Mid 20th Century
Origin: Hereke, Turkey
Dimensions: 90 x 140 cm
This mid 20th century Hereke rug is a refined example of the prestigious weaving tradition from the coastal town of Hereke, Turkey. Originally established to supply the Ottoman court, Hereke workshops became world renowned for their technical precision, often utilizing fine wool or silk to create intricate, palace grade designs.
The composition features a centralized, elongated medallion structure that flows gracefully across a luminous cream field. Rather than a single bold icon, the design is composed of delicately interlaced floral sprays, blossoming palmettes, and fine vine scrolls that create a sense of airy elegance. The palette is remarkably sophisticated, using soft shades of gold, copper, and sky blue to highlight the botanical details without overwhelming the neutral ground.
Surrounding the central field is a series of meticulously rendered borders that mirror the rug’s inner grace. The wide main border, set against a rich golden ochre ground, features a rhythmic “arabesque” pattern of scrolling vines and floral rosettes. This is framed by narrow guard stripes decorated with miniature blossoms, demonstrating the high knot density and exacting detail typical of mid 20th century Hereke production.
This piece represents a bridge between classical imperial styles and the decorative elegance of the modern era.
