Antique Shirvan Rug
Period: Mid 19th Century
Origin: Shirvan, Caucasus
Dimensions: 122 x 176 cm
This mid 19th century Shirvan rug is an exceptional and authentic example of the antique weaving traditions from the Eastern Caucasus. Shirvan rugs from this early period are highly prized by collectors for their fine, dense knotting and the sophisticated clarity of their geometric drafting.
The composition is centered around a series of elongated, nested diamond medallions that radiate across a deep indigo and madder red field. The central ivory core contains a pair of stylized geometric S or dragon motifs, surrounded by a complex arrangement of multi colored stars and latch hook patterns that create a vibrant sense of motion. These early motifs are rendered with a primitive yet precise elegance that is a hallmark of pre commercial Caucasian nomadic art.
The piece is framed by a masterful multi border system. The main border, set against an ivory ground, features a rhythmic leaf and calyx design, flanked by several narrow guard stripes with repeating geometric rosettes. The use of high quality, hand spun wool and a rich palette of natural dyes including luminous sky blue, terracotta, and saffron yellow ensures that this mid 19th century piece retains the graphic power and technical perfection that define the very best of Shirvan weaving.
