Antique Karachop Rug

Period: Mid 19th Century
Origin: Karachop, South Caucasus
Dimensions: 180 x 220 cm

This striking mid 19th century Karachop Kazak rug is a fine example of the bold geometric design tradition of the South Caucasus. Its composition is dominated by a large ivory octagonal medallion, positioned at the centre of a richly decorated madder-red field. The medallion is surrounded by smaller rectangular compartments and geometric forms, creating a carefully balanced and highly structured composition.

The design features a distinctive vocabulary of hooked motifs, stylized stars, rosettes, ram’s-horn forms and abstract floral devices. These highly geometric elements are characteristic of Caucasian weaving and give the rug a strong sense of rhythm and movement. The repeated hooked forms create a dynamic visual connection between the central medallion and the surrounding field.

The colour palette is equally characteristic, combining vibrant madder red with deep indigo blue, warm ivory, muted green and touches of ochre. The naturally aged colours have acquired a beautifully softened quality, giving the rug depth and an appealing antique character. The strong contrast between the red field and blue border allows the individual motifs to remain clearly defined while maintaining overall harmony.

The broad indigo main border is decorated with a lively sequence of angular floral and geometric motifs, including stepped forms, hooks and diagonal elements. Several narrow geometric guard borders frame the composition, creating a strong architectural enclosure around the central design.

A particularly appealing feature of this rug is the expressive quality of its drawing. The slight variations and irregularities within the motifs reflect the individual hand of the weaver and contribute to the distinctive character of antique Caucasian rugs. Rather than the precise uniformity of later commercial production, the design possesses a spontaneous and unmistakably tribal quality.

Overall, this Karachop rug represents a compelling combination of geometric structure, symbolic ornament and vibrant colour. Its monumental central medallion, richly articulated field and distinctive Caucasian motifs make it an excellent example of the Karachop tradition and a highly decorative piece for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
