Antique Dated Shirvan Rug

Period: Late 19th Century
Origin: Shirvan
Dimensions: 130 x 228 cm

This magnificent Shirvan rug, dated 1885, is an exceptional example of the sophisticated geometric artistry originating from the Caucasus region. Shirvan rugs from the late 19th century are highly prized by collectors for their fine weave, complex symbolic repertoire, and the vibrant clarity of their natural dyes.

The composition is centered around a distinctive, elongated stepped medallion in madder red, which contains nested geometric devices and smaller talismans. This central axis is set against a luminous honey-yellow field adorned with a dense “honeycomb” or lattice-work pattern, creating a rich texture that enhances the rug’s visual depth. Rhythmic stylized motifs, including zoomorphic figures and hooked “lale” (tulip) elements, animate the surrounding field, reflecting the deep-rooted tribal traditions and symbolic language of Caucasian weavers.

The color palette is remarkably vivid and harmonious, featuring a brilliant golden yellow, deep madder red, indigo blue, and ivory, all traditionally produced using natural dyes. The sharp contrast between the warm yellow ground and the cool blue and red tones of the motifs emphasizes the graphic precision and bold aesthetic characteristic of the Shirvan district.

The design is framed by multiple geometric borders, including a classic “running dog” inner guard and a primary border featuring stylized polychrome rosettes in a repetitive sequence. These borders provide a strong architectural frame, contributing to the overall balance and visual impact of the piece. The inclusion of the date 1885 adds significant historical value, serving as a definitive record of the peak of 19th century Caucasian textile production.

Overall, this dated 1885 Shirvan rug is a masterpiece of tribal spirit and technical excellence. Its powerful composition, rare color combinations, and masterful execution make it a highly collectible work of art, perfectly suited for both historical study and high-end interior decoration.
