Antique Karachop Rug
Period: Mid 19th Century
Origin: Karachop, Caucasus
Dimensions: 160 x 220 cm
General Design & Composition
This exceptionally rare mid-19th-century Karachop rug represents one of the most iconic and highly prized weaving types from the Kazak region in the Caucasus. Famous for their powerful geometric geometry and vibrant tribal symbolism, Karachop rugs are instantly recognizable by their distinct spatial layout and monumental heraldic motifs.
The central field features the classic Karachop multi-medallion architectural design set against a rare and deeply saturated forest green ground. The central axis is defined by prominent ivory square octagons enclosing inner hooked stepped medallions, flanked by four outer rectangular blocks filled with geometric dice-like motifs and tribal talismans (tamgas).
Motifs & Symbolism
Central Ivory Medallions: The framed ivory squares house geometric latch-hooks and central gabled stepped shields, ancient Caucasian tribal symbols representing protection, sovereignty, and central harmony.
4-and-1 Layout / Dice Motifs: Surrounding the central medallions are smaller rectangular compartments filled with white multi-dot geometric formations (often referred to as “dice” or star motifs), symbolizing good luck, family unity, and cosmic order.
Comb & Tree Motifs: Stylized comb-like (tarak) elements and archaic tree-of-life branches extend along the edges of the main field, historically woven to ward off the evil eye and protect the weaver’s home.
Borders (Bordür): The field is enclosed by an iconic “Star-in-Square” or leaf-and-wineglass main border rendered on a brilliant ivory ground. This primary band is flanked by inner and outer guard stripes featuring barber-pole motifs and reciprocal blue-and-red sawtooth dentil edges.
Color Palette & Dye Quality
Exhibiting the master-level natural dyeing technique of the mid-19th-century Caucasus, this piece features a brilliant, saturated palette:
Field: Saturated moss/forest green (highly sought-after and rare in Kazak rugs)
Accents: Madder red, rich indigo blue, ivory white, golden yellow, and sky blue
Patina: Beautiful, luminous wool quality with a remarkable natural abrash (chromatic color shifts), confirming its high age and pure vegetable-dye origins.
Summary for Collectors & Interior Designers
A true collector’s gemstone, this mid-19th-century Karachop Kazak rug combines monumental geometric strength with an extraordinary color harmony. Its classic size, bold graphics, and rare green ground make it an outstanding focal point for both high-end traditional collections and contemporary interior spaces.
