Antique Karadja Rug

Period: Late 19th Century
Origin: Karadja, Iran
Dimensions: 145 x 195 cm

This magnificent Karadja rug originating from Northwest Persia and dating to the late 19th century, is a significant example of the geometric village weaving traditions of the Heriz region. These rugs are highly esteemed by collectors for their robust construction, high quality wool, and iconic large scale medallions that reflect a distinct tribal and village heritage.

The composition is centered around a series of three prominent, multi layered medallions arranged vertically along a rich madder red field. The central medallion is typically an ivory or dark indigo anchor, often featuring a stepped or cruciform silhouette, while the flanking top and bottom medallions often showcase radial sunburst or eagle motifs. This central axis is further anchored by stylized floral sprays, geometric devices, and traditional tribal talismans that fill the surrounding space with a rhythmic and expressive energy.

The color palette is classic and exceptionally well preserved, featuring saturated madder reds, deep indigo blues, and striking highlights of ivory and gold, all traditionally produced using natural dyes. The strong contrast between the cool blue medallions and the fiery red field emphasizes the graphic clarity and authentic village character of the piece. The high quality, hand spun wool gives these colors a deep luminosity and a sturdy, resilient handle characteristic of authentic late 19th century Karadja production.

The composition is framed by a series of structured borders, the primary one featuring a repetitive sequence of stylized polychrome rosettes and interlocking blossoms against a dark indigo or madder red ground. These borders provide a strong architectural frame that balances the intense energy of the central field and enhances the overall visual impact of the rug. Overall, this  late 19th century Karadja rug is a masterpiece of Persian village artistry, making it a highly coveted work for serious collectors and a stunning centerpiece for refined interiors.
