Antique Karadja Rug

Period: Early 20th Century
Origin: Karadja, Iran
Dimensions: 152 x 200 cm

This rare early 20th century Persian Karadja rug highlights a powerful and rhythmic geometric composition featuring a vertical sequence of three monumental medallions anchored within a rich, saturated madder red field. This structural balance between the central emerald green diamond medallion and the flanking pair of stepped, indigo blue square medallions reflects the pinnacle of the Karadja weaving tradition from the Northwest Persian province of Azerbaijan. Rugs of this antiquity and technical caliber are world renowned for their bold, tribal aesthetic, which combines the geometric clarity of Caucasian designs with the sophisticated color palettes of Persian village art.

The color palette is masterfully balanced, featuring a primary madder red field that serves as a dramatic canvas for high contrast shifts of midnight indigo, emerald green, and soft ivory. These rich and enduring tones, achieved through the expert application of natural dyes over 100 years ago, exhibit a chromatic strength and a saturated depth that are hallmarks of the finest early 20th century tribal productions. The inclusion of a wide, multi layered border system anchored by a primary border containing a rhythmic sequence of reciprocating geometric rosettes and stylized “sampler” motifs creates a precise visual frame that highlights the superior wool quality and the distinctive technical finesse of the weavers.

Structural analysis indicates the use of premium hand spun local wool with a characteristically resilient pile and a firm, substantial handle. The exceptional clarity of the angular outlines specifically the serrated edges of the central diamond and the precisely executed geometric guard borders definitively distinguishes this antique masterpiece as an authentic early 20th century Karadja. Ultimately, this rug stands as a premier example of Persian tribal art, representing a peak in both technical endurance and graphic majesty for global textile collectors.
