Antique Kuba Shirvan Runner

Period: Late 19th Century
Origin: Kuba-Shirvan, Caucaus
Dimensions: 103 x 325 cm

This rare late 19th century Caucasian Kuba Shirvan runner highlights a powerful and rhythmic geometric composition featuring an all over “lattice” or “honeycomb” design of interlocking diamonds, each containing minute, multi colored tribal icons anchored within a deep, saturated mahogany bronze field. This structural balance between the densely repeating central motif and the elongated runner format reflects the pinnacle of the Northeast Caucasian weaving tradition, where precision and intricate detail were the primary hallmarks of the Kuba district.

Rugs of this antiquity are world renowned for their complex “inner” patterns, often requiring a mastery of symmetry and scale that only the most skilled village weavers could achieve.
The color palette is masterfully balanced, featuring a primary mahogany field that serves as a dramatic canvas for high contrast shifts of saffron yellow, sky blue, forest green, and ivory. These rich and enduring tones, achieved through the expert application of natural dyes over 130 years ago, exhibit a chromatic strength and a saturated depth that are hallmarks of the finest late 19th century East Caucasian productions. The inclusion of a wide, ivory ground primary border decorated with a rhythmic sequence of reciprocating geometric rosettes and star medallions creates a precise visual frame that highlights the superior wool quality and the distinctive technical finesse of the weavers.

Structural analysis indicates the use of premium hand spun local wool with a characteristically fine clipped, resilient pile and a firm, substantial handle. The exceptional clarity of the angular outlines specifically the minute “barber pole” stripes separating the border layers and the precisely rendered geometric blossoms within the lattice definitively distinguishes this antique masterpiece as an authentic late 19th century Kuba Shirvan. Ultimately, this rug stands as a premier example of Caucasian textile art, representing a peak in both technical endurance and graphic majesty for global textile collectors.
