Antique Lezgi Rug

Period: Mid 19th Century
Origin: Caucasus
Dimensions: 102 x 200 cm

This rare middle of the 19th century Caucasian Lezgi rug highlights a powerful and rhythmic geometric composition featuring a vertical sequence of five monumental, nested “Lesghi” star medallions anchored within a luminous sky blue field. This structural balance between the vibrant, cool toned ground and the high contrast ivory and madder red medallions reflects the pinnacle of the Dagestan weaving tradition. Rugs of this antiquity are world renowned for their architectural precision and the use of the distinctive eight pointed star motif, which serves as a central protective symbol in Caucasian tribal art.

The color palette is masterfully balanced, featuring a primary sky blue field that serves as a dramatic canvas for high contrast shifts of madder red, forest green, and golden saffron. These rich and enduring tones, achieved through the expert application of natural dyes over 170 years ago, exhibit a chromatic strength and a saturated depth that are hallmarks of the finest mid 19th century Northeast Caucasian productions. The inclusion of a complex, multi layered border system anchored by a wide madder red primary border decorated with a rhythmic sequence of geometric “running dog” and floral rosettes creates a precise visual frame that highlights the superior wool quality and technical finesse of the weavers.

Structural analysis indicates the use of premium hand spun local wool with a characteristically resilient pile and a firm, substantial handle. The exceptional clarity of the angular outlines specifically the minute geometric florets scattered throughout the field and the precisely executed “reciprocating” guard borders definitively distinguishes this antique masterpiece as an authentic mid 19th century Lezgi. Ultimately, this rug stands as a premier example of Caucasian textile art, representing a peak in both technical endurance and graphic majesty for global textile collectors.
