Antique Mahal Carpet
Period: Late 19th century
Origin: Mahal, Iran
Dimensions: 265 x 380 cm
This fine late 19th century Mahal carpet, woven in the Mahal region of central Iran, is an excellent example of the sophisticated village weaving tradition for which the area is renowned.
The carpet features an allover floral lattice design, composed of repeating rosette and palmette motifs arranged in a highly balanced geometric grid. These stylized floral forms reflect the transition in Mahal weaving from strictly tribal patterns toward more decorative, workshop influenced aesthetics, while still retaining a strong village character.
The ivory-toned field provides a luminous backdrop that enhances the richness of the motifs, which are rendered in harmonious shades of soft reds, coral, dusty blues, light indigo, and muted greens. The drawing is clear and confident, with each motif carefully articulated, creating a sense of rhythm and visual continuity across the entire field.
The design is framed by a bold, dark blue main border, decorated with angular floral and leaf motifs typical of the Mahal repertoire. The strong contrast between the border and the lighter field gives the carpet excellent definition and architectural presence. Secondary guard borders with delicate geometric elements further enhance the overall composition.
Mahal carpets from this period are especially appreciated for their durable wool, balanced proportions, and timeless decorative appeal. This piece exemplifies those qualities, making it equally suitable for a refined interior or a serious antique rug collection. Its elegant yet approachable design allows it to integrate seamlessly into both classic and contemporary spaces.
