Antique Milas Prayer Rug

Period: Mid 19th century
Origin: Milas, Western Anatolia
Dimensions: 125 x 175 cm

This mid 19th century Milas rug is a fine example of the classical weaving tradition of the Milas region in the Aegean area of western Anatolia. Woven entirely by hand using wool on a wool foundation, the rug reflects both the aesthetic refinement and the symbolic language characteristic of Milas rugs of this period.

The rug follows the traditional Milas prayer rug (seccade) layout, distinguished by its strong architectural composition. The central field is dominated by a stepped mihrab form, which narrows upward and creates a clear sense of direction and balance. Above the mihrab, stylized floral and vegetal motifs are arranged symmetrically, often interpreted as symbols of fertility, life, and spiritual protection. The hanging lamp motifs at the top of the niche are commonly associated with divine light and guidance, reinforcing the spiritual nature of the design.

The main field is set against a rich red ground, a hallmark of Milas rugs, achieved through natural dyes. The red is complemented by ivory, dark blue, green, yellow, and soft brown tones, creating a harmonious and warm palette. The borders consist of multiple bands filled with repeating geometric and floral motifs, including rosettes, stars, and stylized blossoms. These borders frame the central composition and enhance the rhythmic visual flow of the rug.

Geometric elements such as diamonds and stepped forms appear throughout the design, reflecting the nomadic and tribal roots of the Milas weaving tradition. Despite the apparent complexity, the overall design remains well balanced and highly legible, demonstrating the weaver’s mastery of composition and proportion.

As a whole, this Milas rug stands as a strong representative of mid 19th century Aegean textile art. Its well preserved structure, authentic motifs, and harmonious design make it not only a functional textile but also a valuable cultural artifact that embodies the artistic and symbolic heritage of the Milas region.
