Antique Neiriz Runner

Period: Late 19th Century
Origin: Neiriz, Fars Province, Southwest Persia
Dimensions: 150 x 410 cm

This distinctive late 19th century Neiriz runner displays the bold geometric character and highly expressive decorative vocabulary associated with the weaving traditions of southern Persia. Its elongated format is particularly well suited to a corridor or long architectural space.
The composition is organized around a striking sequence of large, vertically aligned geometric floral and Tree-of-Life-inspired medallions, creating a strong sense of rhythm along the length of the runner. Each principal motif combines angular branches, stylized flowers and curling forms, while the surrounding field is animated by smaller floral elements, birds and geometric ornaments.

The deep madder-red field provides a rich background for the contrasting ivory, indigo, blue, ochre and muted green motifs. The combination of these colours gives the runner a vibrant yet naturally aged appearance, with the softened tones contributing greatly to its antique character.

The surrounding borders are particularly decorative, featuring continuous floral and vegetal ornament arranged within a dark ground. Smaller geometric guard borders frame the main composition and reinforce the strong linear character of the runner.

Neiriz weaving is known for its relationship to the broader traditions of southern Persian tribal and village carpets, with influences from Qashqai and other local weaving groups. Geometric medallions, trees, birds and stylized floral forms are among the recurring motifs found in Neiriz carpets, often interpreted with considerable individuality by the weaver.

Overall, this runner is distinguished by its elongated architectural format, repeated vertical medallions, expressive geometric drawing and rich red-and-indigo palette. The balance between strong geometric structure and lively naturalistic motifs gives it a distinctive presence, making it an especially attractive example of late 19th-century Neiriz weaving.
