Antique Pair of Luri Bags
Period: Late 19th Century
Origin: Iran
Dimensions: 23 x 23 / 24 x 24 cm
This rare, late 19th century pair of Luri bags is an extraordinary and incredibly charming testament to the nomadic weaving traditions of the Lurs of Western Persia. Hand knotted with premium, lustrous hand spun wool that yields a thick, robust pile and a wonderfully supple handle, this matching pair of small storage bags or vanity pouches showcases a brilliant command over dense geometric patterning. The central square fields feature a dynamic, tightly drawn series of diagonal stripes intricately decorated with continuous multicolored geometric waves and micro patterns that create a vibrant, rolling sense of movement across the wool canvas.
The intense composition is brought to life by a magnificent and deeply resonant palette of organic vegetable dyes. The striking diagonal bands alter beautifully between deep indigo blue, warm forest green, and rich madder red, while crisp ivory highlights lend an exceptional clarity to the tribal linework. Framing this active movement is an elaborate, multi layered border system featuring a bold madder red main band decorated with archaic geometric hooks, closely flanked by solid dark guard stripes that provide a sharp structural container for each face. Notably, both pieces have beautifully preserved their original multi colored woven flat weave rims and structural hanging loops along the top edges, demonstrating their authentic tribal utility.
Exhibiting a wonderfully authentic aged patina, soft natural abrash variations where the organic tones have matured beautifully over more than a century, and a remarkably healthy pile structure, this rare pair carries a profound visual presence. The charming spontaneity of the layout combined with the structural completeness unique to intact tribal bags gives this pair an immense collectible appeal and a timeless versatility. It stands as an outstanding work of early Persian nomadic art, bringing a rich sense of historical narrative, rustic elegance, and warm, grounding soul to any specialized collection or curated interior display.
