Antique Serapi Carpet
Period: Late 19th century
Origin: Serapi, Northern Iran
Dimensions: 390 x 570 cm
This exceptional Serapi rug, woven in the late 19th century in northern Iran, represents one of the finest examples of Persian craftsmanship from the Heriz-Serapi weaving tradition. Serapi rugs are renowned for their refined geometric design, rich coloration, and superb balance between bold artistry and structural elegance — and this piece perfectly captures that legacy.
The rug features a striking central medallion set against a deep terracotta-red field, framed by ivory and soft blue spandrels. The large-scale geometric medallion, rendered in shades of navy, ivory, and light blue, is intricately surrounded by stylized floral motifs, angular vines, and abstract palmettes. These motifs, inspired by classical Persian garden and architectural elements, convey harmony and vitality throughout the composition.
The border design showcases the traditional Herati and rosette patterns, skillfully arranged in a wide main band flanked by multiple narrow guard stripes. The palette — dominated by warm reds, indigo blues, ivory, and touches of pale green — is derived entirely from natural vegetable dyes, giving the rug a timeless, organic depth that has mellowed beautifully with age.
Serapi rugs of this period are distinguished by their fine hand-spun wool, crisp drawing, and open, spacious design — characteristics that set them apart from the denser and more commercial Heriz weavings that followed. The craftsmanship of this rug reveals the work of highly skilled weavers who balanced artistic freedom with meticulous technique.
This late 19th-century Serapi is not only a testament to the rich artistic heritage of northern Iran but also a true collector’s piece — embodying grace, durability, and the enduring beauty of Persian weaving traditions.
