This rare, late 19th century Shahsevan bagface is an extraordinary testament to the highly specialized nomadic weaving traditions of northwestern Persia and the southern Caucasus region. Hand knotted with resilient, hand spun tribal wool that retains its luminous quality after more than a century, this piece showcases the powerful, protective geometric iconography characteristic of the Shahsevan confederation. The central composition features a stark midnight blue field dominated by a massive, highly abstracted cream colored medallion resembling an ancient double headed bird or ancestral heraldic emblem, a motif deeply tied to nomadic identity and protection.

The dramatic central field is closely framed by floating geometric diamonds and stars, which lead the eye to an exceptionally wide, rich cocoa brown main border. This expansive border is meticulously decorated with an alternating series of stepped ivory, madder red, and sage green cartouches, each enclosing complex polychrome rosettes and geometric pinwheels that provide a fascinating secondary rhythm to the primary design. The outer edges showcase the authentic, rugged nature of its nomadic origin, preserving sections of the original shaggy wool finish and flat weave elements that speak directly to its historical use as a durable utility sack or saddlebag.
