Antique Shahsevan Long Rug

Period: Mid 19th Century
Origin: Shahsevan
Dimensions: 105 x 293 cm

This striking Shahsevan rug was woven by nomadic Shahsevan tribes in the mid nineteenth century in the border regions between Iran and the Caucasus. Its elongated format reflects traditional proportions commonly used for tent interiors and passage areas in nomadic life.

Set against a deep indigo ground, the bold geometric medallions are characteristic of Shahsevan weaving and carry protective and symbolic meanings. Ram horn motifs, fertility symbols, stars, and ancient tribal emblems appear throughout the composition, emphasizing the cultural and narrative depth of the rug beyond its decorative appeal.

The light colored main border creates a strong contrast with the field and is animated by rhythmic geometric motifs that frame the composition with balance and clarity. The harmonious use of red, indigo, ivory, and green tones, derived from natural dyes, contributes to the rug’s enduring vibrancy despite its age.

In terms of both design language and wool quality, this rug represents a high quality and collectible example of mid nineteenth century Shahsevan tribal weaving.
