Antique Dated Marashali Prayer Rug
Period: 1293 – 1876 ( Dated )
Origin: Marashali, Eastern Caucasus
Dimension: 110 x 135 cm
This Marasali rug was woven in the Marashali region of the Eastern Caucasus, an area well known for its finely detailed rugs distinguished by dense patterning and symbolic ornamentation. The presence of the woven inscription “1293” in the Islamic calendar (corresponding to 1876–77 AD) provides a rare and valuable historical reference, firmly anchoring the rug in the late 19th century.
The rug features a prayer rug inspired composition, with a stepped mihrab form rising from the upper portion of the field. This architectural motif reflects Islamic devotional design and gives the rug a strong vertical orientation and spiritual character. The field is densely filled with an allover lattice of stylized floral motifs, often interpreted as abstracted flowers or palmettes, symbolizing life, renewal, and continuity. The repetitive and highly organized patterning is characteristic of Marasali weaving and demonstrates exceptional technical precision.
The ivory ground creates a striking contrast with the dark indigo outlines and richly colored floral elements in shades of red, blue, yellow, and soft green. This interplay of light and dark enhances the clarity of the motifs and highlights the rhythmic structure of the design. Along the lower portion of the field, a row of larger, more boldly colored floral forms adds visual weight and balance to the overall composition.
The rug is framed by multiple borders, with a wide main border dominated by bold geometric rosettes and star motifs rendered on a vibrant red ground. These angular patterns, typical of Eastern Caucasian rugs, are traditionally associated with protection and strength. Narrow guard borders with repeating geometric elements further reinforce the strong graphic quality of the piece.
Woven with wool pile on a wool foundation, the rug displays the tight knotting and crisp drawing for which Marasali rugs are admired. The use of natural dyes has resulted in vivid yet harmonious colors that have aged gracefully over time.
Overall, this rug is an outstanding example of late 19th-century Marasali weaving, combining historical significance, religious symbolism, and refined decorative complexity, making it both a collectible textile and a compelling cultural artifact.
