This rare late 19th century Shirvan rug is a superb example of Caucasian tribal art, showcasing the geometric precision and rich symbolic language characteristic of the Shirvan region. Crafted during the peak of antique Caucasian weaving, this piece features a classic “multiple medallion” composition set against a deep madder red field. The central axis is dominated by three large, ivory ground hexagonal medallions, known as “Lesghi stars” or stepped polygons, which are filled with intricate geometric cross motifs representing protection and tribal identity.

The field is densely populated with a variety of archaic secondary motifs, including smaller octagonal “gul” medallions and stylized “S” shapes (hooked motifs), which were traditionally woven into rugs to ward off the evil eye. Surrounding the central field is a series of sophisticated borders, most notably the “Calyx and Leaf” or “Wine Glass” border on a white ground, a hallmark of high quality Shirvan rugs that provides a crisp, elegant frame to the vibrant interior.

Woven with hand-spun wool and colored with 100% natural vegetable dyes, the rug displays a brilliant palette of indigo blue, saffron yellow, and ivory, all of which have softened beautifully over more than a century. The elongated, runner-like proportions and the structural integrity of the weave reflect the skilled craftsmanship of the Shirvan nomadic weavers. This rug is not merely a floor covering but a historical document of Caucasian culture, offering a timeless aesthetic that brings warmth and authentic character to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
