Antique Tebriz Runner
Period: Early 20th Century
Origin: Iran, Tabriz
Dimensions: 82 × 260 cm
This elegant early 20th-century Persian runner, attributed to the Tabriz region, is distinguished by its elongated proportions and sophisticated floral composition. The design is centered around a deep charcoal-black field, creating a dramatic ground against which the richly colored floral motifs are particularly vivid.
The field features a continuous arrangement of flowering vines, rosettes, palmettes and delicate scrolling foliage, punctuated by three prominent floral medallions positioned along the central axis. These medallions provide a sense of rhythm and balance, while the surrounding floral sprays create a flowing, almost garden-like movement throughout the composition.
The palette combines deep reds, burgundy, dusty pinks, soft blues, ivory and touches of green and gold. The dark ground enhances the contrast and gives the runner an especially refined and elegant character.
A richly ornamented principal border frames the field, incorporating repeating floral motifs and scrolling vines, while narrower guard borders add definition and emphasize the elongated structure of the piece. The relationship between the central field and borders creates a harmonious transition from the dense floral interior to the outer frame.
The overall design reflects the sophisticated drawing associated with early 20th-century Tabriz weaving, combining classical Persian floral vocabulary with a highly controlled and balanced composition. Its narrow proportions make it particularly versatile as a decorative runner, while the richness of its motifs rewards close viewing.
