Antique Tekke Torba

Period: Mid 19th Century
Origin: Tekke, Turkmenistan
Dimensions: 30 x 83 cm

This robust Tekke Turkmen torba, dating to the mid-19th century, is a premier example of nomadic functional art from Central Asia. Tekke weavings are highly distinguished among Turkmen groups for their fine knotting, lustrous wool, and the classic use of the “Tekke gul.”

The design is organized around a primary grid of Tekke guls, characterized by their lobed, cruciform silhouettes and intricate internal geometric divisions. These guls are rendered in a balanced palette of ivory, deep indigo, and touches of orange-red against a rich, saturated madder red field. Between the primary emblems, smaller secondary “chemche” guls fill the space, creating a rhythmic and protective symbolic language. The spaciousness of the layout and the precision of the draftsmanship are hallmarks of authentic mid-century nomadic production.

The color palette is classic and vibrant, achieved through the master use of natural dyes. The deep madder red ground provides a powerful stage for the contrasting ivory highlights and cool indigo blues. The high-quality, hand-spun wool gives the chuval a soft luminosity and a heavy, supple handle, reflecting its history as a durable object used to store and transport household goods within the yurt.

The composition is enclosed by multiple geometric borders, while the bottom section features a wide elem (skirt) panel decorated with a continuous row of stylized floral or “tree of life” motifs. These borders provide a structured architectural frame that balances the intense repetition of the central medallions.

Overall, this mid-19th century Tekke chuval is a masterpiece of Turkmen tribal weaving. Its powerful geometric order, vibrant natural colors, and authentic nomadic spirit make it a highly collectible work of textile art, perfectly suited for display as a wall hanging or a decorative accent in refined interiors.
