Antique Caucasian Zileh

Period: Mid 19th Century
Origin: South Caucasus
Dimensions: 200 x 290 cm

This rare mid 19th century Caucasian Zileh (Sileh) highlights a powerful and rhythmic composition featuring large scale, interlocking S shaped motifs traditionally interpreted as stylized dragons—rendered in alternating ivory, madder red, and deep indigo. This structural balance between the colossal “S” forms and the intricate secondary tribal filler motifs reflects the pinnacle of the South Caucasian flat-weaving tradition. Zilehs are unique among Caucasian textiles, typically woven in two separate vertical halves on a narrow loom and then expertly joined together, as evidenced by the central vertical seam in this piece.

The color palette is masterfully balanced, featuring a primary saturated madder red ground that serves as a dramatic canvas for the high contrast shifts of sapphire blue, pristine ivory, and earthy walnut brown. These rich and enduring tones, achieved through the expert application of natural dyes nearly 170 years ago, exhibit a chromatic strength and graphic clarity that are hallmarks of the finest mid 19th century productions. The design represents a masterful execution of the dragon form aesthetic, utilizing geometric hatch marks and internal bird like symbols to create a sense of ancient, mythological power.

Structural analysis indicates a complex soumak (weft wrapping) technique on a robust woolen foundation, resulting in a durable flat weave with a characteristically ribbed texture and a supple handle. The crisp clarity of the hooked outlines and the presence of significant abrash (natural tonal variation) within the red and blue fields definitively distinguish this antique masterpiece from later commercial examples or modern synthetic reproductions. The presence of authentic aging signs, including the noble softening of the woolen fibers and the slightly offset alignment of the joined halves, serve as physical verification of its mid 19th century origin and its status as a premier cultural artifact of the nomadic Caucasian heritage.

Ultimately, this Zileh stands as a premier example of Caucasian tribal art, representing a peak in both technical endurance and archaic graphic power. Its technical integrity, monumental dragon composition, and historical significance make it a priceless cultural treasure for global textile collectors and prestigious museum collections. The fierce presence and modern geometric energy of this piece make it not only a serious investment but a breathtaking centerpiece, preserving the legacy of the South Caucasian master weavers for future generations.
