Antique Nain Rug
Period: Late 19th Century
Origin: İran
Dimensions. 165 x 257 cm
This magnificent late 19th century Nain rug (often considered a precursor to the modern Nain workshops) is an extraordinary masterpiece of Persian weaving, showcasing the technical precision and aristocratic elegance for which the Isfahan-Nain region is world-renowned. The composition is centered around a series of highly intricate ivory medallions set against a deep, midnight indigo field, creating a striking visual contrast that highlights the rug’s sophisticated draftsmanship. The entire field is densely populated with a lush network of scrolling vines, delicate floral palmettes, and classical Shah Abbasi motifs, all rendered with such fine detail that it creates a sense of infinite depth.
The color palette is masterfully balanced, utilizing a harmonious blend of creamy fildişi, deep blues, and subtle coral or terracotta accents that provide a warm glow to the floral elements. These colors were traditionally produced using the highest quality natural dyes, ensuring a clarity and luminosity that has only become more refined with age. The design is framed by a grand ivory primary border, decorated with a repetitive sequence of stylized botanical sprays and continuous vine scrolls, providing a structured and regal architectural frame that perfectly anchors the ornate complexity of the central field.
