Antique Shirvan Rug
Period: Mid 19th century
Origin: Shirvan, Caucaus
Dimensions: 105×155 cm
This striking rug was woven in the mid-19th century in the Shirvan region of the Eastern Caucasus. Shirvan rugs are celebrated for their tight knotting, refined geometric patterns, and vivid color palettes, making them some of the most distinguished examples of Caucasian weaving.
The deep blue field is adorned with a succession of octagonal star-gul medallions, rendered in vibrant shades of red, yellow, pink, and green. These motifs create a sense of rhythm and symmetry, while the small scattered ornaments between them add dynamism and maintain the overall balance of the design.
The wide borders are decorated with stylized star and floral motifs, a hallmark of Shirvan artistry. This intricate border system not only frames the rug beautifully but also enhances its visual depth and decorative appeal.
Handwoven entirely from natural wool and dyed with vegetable-based colors, the rug retains its remarkable brilliance and durability even after more than a century. It stands as both a valuable collector’s piece and a unique decorative element that brings historical richness and artistic character to any space.
