This fine antique runner was woven in the Shirvan region of the Caucasus in the mid 19th century, an area renowned for its refined weaving traditions and highly disciplined geometric designs. Shirvan runners are especially admired for their elongated proportions, balanced compositions, and exceptional clarity of pattern.

The design is organized around a deep indigo central field filled with a continuous vertical sequence of stylized diamond and hooked medallions. These motifs, rendered in a rhythmic and almost architectural arrangement, are characteristic of Shirvan weaving and symbolize protection, continuity, and harmony. The precise repetition creates a strong sense of movement along the length of the rug, perfectly suited to its runner format.

Surrounding the field are multiple well-defined borders. The main border features a repeating series of colorful geometric rosettes and diamond forms, each carefully framed and separated, reflecting the Shirvan weavers’ exceptional sense of order and proportion. These are complemented by several secondary guard borders with zigzag and reciprocal motifs, adding visual depth and reinforcing the linear elegance of the composition.
