Signed Feshane Silk Rug

Period: Late 19th Century
Origin: Feshane, Turkey
Dimensions: 83 x 121 cm

This rare late 19th  century Turkish signed Feshane silk prayer rug highlights a powerful and rhythmic floral composition featuring a vibrant magenta pink prayer niche with a distinctive architectural stepped silhouette anchored within a luminous ivory cream field. This structural balance between the bold, saturated silk niche and the elegantly decorated surrounding panels featuring delicate scrolling floral vines and stylized star shaped blossoms reflects the pinnacle of the Feshane-i Amire imperial workshop tradition in Istanbul. Silk rugs of this period are world renowned for their technical refinement and their ability to translate traditional Ottoman courtly motifs into a luxurious, lustrous medium.

The color palette is masterfully balanced, featuring a primary magenta pink niche that serves as a dramatic canvas for high contrast shifts of soft peach, golden tan, and ivory. These rich and enduring tones, achieved through the expert application of dyes on premium silk thread over a century ago, exhibit a chromatic strength and a saturated depth that are hallmarks of the finest late 19th century Turkish urban productions. The inclusion of a formal multi layered border system anchored by a primary magenta ground border populated by a rhythmic sequence of intricate floral rosettes creates a precise visual frame that highlights the superior silk quality and the distinctive technical finesse of the weavers.

A defining feature of this masterpiece is the calligraphic cartouche located at the base of the field. This inscription panel contains an Ottoman Turkish phrase stating that the rug was manufactured “specially for Hüseyin Avni Pasha”. This ownership record is not merely a signature; it is an invaluable provenance document confirming that the rug was a high status commission designed for a prominent member of the late Ottoman aristocracy, likely produced within the imperial Feshane workshops.

Structural analysis indicates the use of premium hand spun silk with a characteristically soft, lustrous pile and a supple yet firm handle. The exceptional clarity of the curvilinear outlines specifically the delicate floral sprays in the spandrels and the precisely executed calligraphic cartouche definitively distinguish this antique masterpiece as an authenticlate 19th century Feshane ipek. Ultimately, this prayer rug stands as a premier example of late Ottoman textile art, representing a peak in both technical endurance and graphic majesty for global textile collectors.
