Antique Talish Rug
Period: Late 19th century
Origin: Talish, South Caucaus
Dimensions: 110 x 250 cm
This late 19th century Talish rug from the southern Caucasus is an extraordinary example of the regions refined village weaving tradition, distinguished by its striking use of color and its harmonious, architectural composition.
What makes this piece especially remarkable is its green central field, a highly uncommon and desirable feature in Talish rugs. Green dyes were more difficult and costly to produce during the 19th century, making such examples significantly rarer than those with the more typical indigo blue or red fields.
The elongated central panel displays a beautifully shifting spectrum of greens—from soft moss tones to deep emerald and teal—creating a serene, painterly effect. This subtle abrash, the natural variation in hand-dyed wool, adds depth, authenticity, and a sense of movement to the rug. The field is framed by a delicate zigzag motif, which provides a crisp transition between the green center and the surrounding borders.
Encircling the central field is a wide ivory-ground border richly decorated with large rosette medallions and small cross-floral motifs. These rosettes, executed in vibrant shades of red, blue, gold, and terracotta, stand out brilliantly against the clean ivory background. This luminous contrast enhances the rugs balanced geometry and exemplifies the signature elegance of Talish weaving.
The composition is further defined by multiple guard borders—each containing finely rendered geometric elements in traditional Caucasian colors. The outermost border, featuring interlocking diamond and cross motifs in red, blue, and green, provides a cohesive frame that unifies the rugs structure and emphasizes its elongated form.
Overall, this rug represents a particularly rare and collectible variant of Talish weaving, combining the regions classic border artistry with an exceptionally unusual green field. Its rich palette, refined simplicity, and unique color composition make it a standout piece for both collectors and interior spaces seeking an authentic and distinguished antique textile.
