Antique Shirvan Runner
Period: Mid 19th century
Origin: Shirvan, Caucasus
Dimensions: 108 x 300 cm
This striking antique runner was woven in the Shirvan region of the Caucasus in the mid-19th century, an area celebrated for its sophisticated geometric vocabulary and finely structured compositions. Shirvan weavings from this period are especially valued for their bold designs, clarity of drawing, and harmonious balance between ornament and structure.
The field of the rug is organized around a vertical sequence of large, strongly articulated polygonal medallions arranged along a central axis. These medallions, rendered in shades of madder red, deep indigo, ivory, and soft greens, are interconnected by smaller geometric elements and symbolic motifs. The internal detailing of the medallions—including hooked forms, stepped outlines, and stylized cross and latch hook motifs reflects the ancient symbolic language of the Caucasus, often associated with protection, fertility, and continuity.
Between the main medallions appear secondary geometric devices, such as small panels with quartered color blocks and angular tribal symbols, adding visual rhythm and complexity to the design. The surrounding field is further enriched with scattered minor motifs, contributing to the dynamic yet well controlled overall composition.
The border system is particularly refined. A wide main border filled with angular, reciprocal geometric motifs frames the central field, while multiple narrow guard borders featuring running vine, serrated leaf, and zigzag patterns enhance the sense of movement and precision. The strong contrast between the ivory toned borders and the richly colored field is a hallmark of classic Shirvan design.
The color palette is vivid yet balanced, dominated by saturated reds and blues, complemented by ivory, yellow, light blue, and green accents. All colors are derived from natural dyes, which have aged beautifully, giving the rug a soft patina while preserving remarkable clarity and contrast.
Woven with high quality wool and a relatively fine, even knotting structure, this Shirvan runner exemplifies the technical skill and artistic discipline of mid 19th century Caucasian weavers. Its elongated proportions, bold medallion layout, and timeless geometric language make it both a significant historical textile and a powerful decorative piece suitable for a wide range of interiors.
