This late 19th century Gabbeh, woven by the nomadic Qashqai tribes of Southwest Persia, is a vibrant and highly expressive example of tribal folk art. Gabbehs are renowned for their long pile, simple geometric forms, and bold use of color, traditionally serving as warm sleeping rugs for nomadic families.

The composition is centered around a massive, multi stepped diamond medallion in a deep midnight blue, which contains a smaller, radiant red sunburst or floral motif at its core. This central medallion is set against a luminous saffron yellow field, creating a high contrast visual impact. Small, stylized floral sprays and “Tree of Life” blossoms are scattered in the corners of the field, rendered in a charmingly primitive and spontaneous style. The palette is exceptionally rich, utilizing saturated natural dyes like madder red, indigo, and weld yellow that have developed a beautiful patina over time.

The rug is framed by multiple narrow borders, featuring a “running dog” geometric pattern and a series of colorful rosettes on an ivory ground. The use of thick, hand spun wool and the bold, abstract geometry make this late 19th century piece a timeless work of art that bridges the gap between ancient nomadic tradition and modern minimalist aesthetic.
