Antique Dazkiri Runner
Period: Mid 19th Century
Origin: Dazkiri
Dimensions: 107 x 410 cm
This rare mid 19th century runner originates from the famous weaving village of Dazkırı in Southwestern Anatolia, a region highly sought after by collectors for its bold tribal aesthetics, saturated organic colors, and archaic symbolic language.
The main field is dominated by a powerful, vertically aligned Tree of Life composition set against a deep madder-red background. The design flows continuously along the central axis with stacked, serrated chevron branches extending outward in a rhythmic, monumental structure. The spacious field layout, combined with the village’s signature geometric precision, creates a striking visual presence suitable for both traditional and high-end contemporary spaces.
Tree of Life : The central ascending trunk with upward-reaching branches symbolizes immortality, the connection between heaven and earth, and family lineage.
Comb / Serrated Chevron Motifs: The branched limbs feature stylized comb-like (tarak) and serrated leaf elements, traditional tribal talismans woven to ward off the evil eye and protect against bad fortune.
Eight-Pointed Stars & Floral Rosettes: Flanking the central column and densely decorating the borders are ancient eight-pointed star motifs (yıldız), representing happiness, spirituality, and cosmic order.
Borders : The central field is enveloped by a multi-layered border frame. The principal inner border displays a series of geometric star rosettes on an ivory ground, flanked by outer guard bands filled with stepped geometric meanders and protective reciprocal latch-hook icons in warm saffron-yellow, terracotta, and soft sky blue.
Exhibiting the rich chromatic palette characteristic of authentic mid-19th-century Dazkırı textiles, this runner features vibrant madder red, deep indigo blue, brilliant saffron yellow, ivory, and subtle accents of forest green and turquoise. All hues are derived from natural vegetable dyes, showing a wonderful luminous patina and subtle abrash (natural shade variations) that underscore its century-and-a-half-old heritage and hand-woven authenticity.
