Antique Afshar Rug
Period: Late 19th Century
Origin: Southeast Iran
Dimensions: 133 x 170 cm
This late 19th century Afshar rug is a brilliant example of the sophisticated tribal weaving traditions of Southeast Persia. The Afshar nomads are renowned for their ability to integrate complex urban design influences with the bold, spontaneous spirit of village art, resulting in pieces that are both technically proficient and artistically expressive.
The composition features a rhythmic “all over” pattern of large, stylized palmettes arranged in staggered rows across a warm ivory field. Each palmette is rendered with a unique internal geometry and a vibrant palette of rose, sky blue, and forest green, giving the rug a sense of movement and variety. Sprinkled throughout the remaining space are charming secondary motifs, including small “boteh” (paisley) figures and geometric florets, which are hallmarks of the Afshar weaver’s personal touch.
The border system is particularly vibrant, featuring a main border on a medium blue ground decorated with a continuous vine of stylized blossoms. This is flanked by multiple guard stripes, including a distinctive “barber pole” outer edge that adds a crisp, graphic frame to the ornate interior. The use of high quality wool and a rich array of natural dyes ensures that this late 19th century piece retains the luminous glow and soft texture prized by collectors of Persian tribal rugs.
