Antique Heriz Rug
Period: Late 19th Century
Origin: Heriz, Northwest Iran
Dimensions: 116 x 123 cm
This late 19th century Heriz rug is a quintessential example of the powerful geometric style that defines the Northwest Persian weaving tradition. Known for their rugged construction and bold artistic language, Heriz rugs from this era are highly celebrated for their ability to balance grand architectural forms with rich, saturated colors derived from natural dyes.
The composition is dominated by a massive, angular central medallion that occupies nearly the entire field. This primary motif is rendered with the sharp, rectilinear lines characteristic of the region, featuring a dark indigo core surrounded by layers of vibrant terracotta and madder red. From the central medallion, stylized floral stems and geometric palmettes extend into the ivory spandrels, creating a dynamic visual tension between the dark central icon and the lighter corners.
A sophisticated border system frames the dramatic central field, featuring a wide main border on a navy ground. This border is decorated with a rhythmic succession of large, geometric rosettes and serrated leaves, a variation of the classic “Samovar” or “Herati” border design. The use of double outlining and a wide array of secondary colors, including sky blue and golden yellow, adds extraordinary depth and character to this formidable piece of late 19th century nomadic art.
