Antique Bidjar Runner
Period: Late 19th Century
Origin: Northwest Iran
Dimensions: 110×485 cm
This late 19th century Bidjar runner is a superlative example of the “Iron Rugs of Persia,” a nickname earned by the legendary durability and heavy construction characteristic of this region. Bidjar weavings are celebrated for their thick, double-wefted structure and their ability to translate intricate urban floral patterns into a powerful, almost architectural tribal language.
The long, narrow composition is dominated by a deep midnight blue field filled with a highly detailed “Herati” or “Mahi” (fish) design. This classic pattern consists of a repetitive lattice of small floral rosettes and serrated leaves that create a dense, shimmering visual texture across the entire length of the runner. The palette is rich and authoritative, utilizing saturated shades of madder red, indigo, and forest green to highlight the mathematical precision of the nomadic artistry.
The central field is framed by a sophisticated border system that provides a robust contrast to the delicate interior lattice. The main border, set against a vibrant terracotta red ground, features a rhythmic “Samovar” pattern of large stylized palmettes and interlocking vine scrolls. Flanked by multiple narrow guard stripes, this border arrangement ensures that the piece maintains its formal elegance while embodying the rugged strength of late 19th century Kurdish weaving.
