Antique Sarab Runner
Period: Late 19th century
Origin: Sarab, Iran
Dimensions: 112 x 386 cm
This rare Persian Sarab Runner was woven in the Sarab region of Northwest Iran during the late 19th century. Sarab rugs are highly regarded for their distinctive tribal character, elongated formats, and bold, architectural designs, making them especially desirable among collectors and interior designers.
The field of this runner features a repeating sequence of large geometric medallions arranged along the central axis, a hallmark of Sarab weavings. These medallions are richly decorated with stylized floral and symbolic motifs, reflecting the deep rooted nomadic traditions of the region. Angular lines, hooked elements, and abstracted plant forms create a dynamic visual rhythm throughout the composition.
The main border is framed by multiple guard borders filled with small geometric rosettes and protective motifs, enhancing both the visual balance and symbolic meaning of the piece. The color palette is characteristic of Sarab rugs, featuring warm earthy tones, soft camel and beige hues, deep indigo blues, and muted reds, all derived from natural dyes that have aged gracefully over time.
Woven with a wool pile on a sturdy wool foundation, this runner demonstrates excellent craftsmanship and durability. The long and narrow format makes it particularly well-suited for hallways, corridors, or gallery-style interiors.
This late 19th century Sarab runner is not only a functional textile but also a strong example of Persian tribal weaving, embodying history, culture, and timeless design.
