This distinctive late 19th century Caucasian Cloudband rug is a striking example of the region’s highly expressive tribal weaving tradition. Its design combines bold geometric structure with stylized organic forms, resulting in a composition that is both decorative and deeply rooted in Caucasian textile aesthetics.

The central field is organized around two large, vertically aligned medallions, each enclosed within an angular, architectural framework. The medallions are filled with highly stylized cloudband motifs, characterized by their curving, hooked and scrolling forms. Traditionally associated with the ancient cloud collar or cloudband motif, these forms were widely adapted and transformed within Caucasian and Persian weaving traditions.

The two principal medallions are deliberately differentiated through their use of color. One is set against a deep indigo-blue ground, while the other is surrounded by a rich green field, both standing boldly against the dominant madder-red background of the rug. Their symmetrical placement creates a strong vertical axis and gives the composition a sense of balance and architectural order.

Between and around the principal medallions are smaller geometric and tribal motifs, including stylized floral elements, stepped forms, crosses, diamonds and angular rosettes. These secondary motifs enliven the surrounding red field and create a fascinating contrast between the large scale cloudband forms and the smaller, more spontaneous ornaments.

The rug is framed by a particularly impressive multi layered border system. The principal border is composed of a continuous succession of colorful, highly stylized geometric motifs resembling crosses, diamonds and hooked floral forms, arranged against a light ivory ground. This bright outer border provides a strong visual frame for the darker and more densely patterned central composition.

The color palette is exceptionally characteristic of antique Caucasian weaving, combining madder red, deep indigo blue, natural green, ivory and touches of ochre and brown. The interplay of these colors gives the rug considerable depth while maintaining a remarkably coherent overall design.

What makes this piece especially appealing is the way the weaver has interpreted the Cloudband motif in a distinctly tribal and geometric language. The forms are bold, almost architectural, yet retain a sense of movement through their curling contours and hooked extensions. The slight variations in drawing and symmetry further emphasize the handmade character of the textile.
