This distinctive late 19th century Afshar Sofra was woven in the tribal weaving tradition of the Afshar people of Persia (present-day Iran). It is a remarkable example of the highly graphic and expressive textile tradition associated with Afshar weaving.

The composition is dominated by bold horizontal bands of deep indigo and rich madder red, creating a powerful and harmonious visual rhythm. Along the sides, the bands are articulated by dramatic serrated, triangular and zigzag motifs, lending the design a strong sense of movement and geometric precision.

Within the dark blue bands are repeated diamond shaped motifs, each containing finely drawn internal geometric details. These smaller ornaments provide a delicate counterpoint to the larger-scale serrated forms and demonstrate the weaver’s ability to combine simplicity of structure with considerable decorative detail.

The restrained palette of natural indigo blue and madder red is particularly striking. These colors, together with the subtle variations resulting from the handwoven nature of the textile, give the piece an authentic and beautifully aged appearance.
