Antique Karachop Rug
Origin: Caucasus, Karachop (Karachov) region
Period: Mid-19th Century
Dimensions: 117 × 260 cm
This remarkable mid 19th century Karachop rug is a fine example of the bold geometric language of South Caucasian tribal weaving. Its elongated composition is organized along a strong vertical axis, with a succession of monumental geometric medallions creating a rhythmic and almost architectural effect.
The central medallions combine stepped, hooked and cruciform forms with smaller diamonds, stars and stylized ram’s-horn motifs. The surrounding field is enriched with an intricate vocabulary of secondary geometric ornaments, giving the design remarkable depth while retaining a strong sense of order. The subtle irregularities in the drawing are characteristic of early handwoven Caucasian rugs and add considerably to its character and authenticity.
The palette is exceptionally vibrant, dominated by madder red, indigo and sky blue, ivory and deep green, complemented by touches of warm yellow and terracotta. The naturally dyed colors have developed a beautiful depth and patina over time, enhancing the graphic strength of the composition.
A sophisticated multi-tiered border surrounds the field, featuring repeated hooked and scrolling motifs that echo the geometry of the central design. This creates a harmonious dialogue between the field and its borders.
With its unusual elongated format, powerful geometric vocabulary, rich tribal ornament and luminous antique palette, this Karachop represents a particularly compelling example of 19th-century Caucasian weaving, and would make an exceptional addition to a collection of antique rugs and tribal textiles.
