This elegant late 19th century Shirvan runner features a highly sophisticated and finely articulated geometric composition, characteristic of the finest weaving traditions of the Caucasus. The elongated format is dominated by a narrow central field containing a continuous sequence of large, stylized geometric motifs, arranged along a strong vertical axis and creating a distinctive sense of rhythm and movement.

The central design is composed of angular, interconnected forms with stepped outlines, small hooked elements and stylized floral details. These motifs are placed against a deep indigo ground and are articulated in rich shades of madder red, ivory, blue, green, ochre and brown. The repeated arrangement of the central motifs gives the composition a remarkable sense of symmetry while retaining the individual character typical of village woven Caucasian carpets.

Surrounding the central field is an exceptionally elaborate series of narrow geometric borders. The broad ivory side borders are particularly striking, decorated with an alternating sequence of colorful stylized floral and star shaped motifs. Their arrangement creates a lively contrast with the darker central panel and gives the runner a strong graphic character.

The outer borders are composed of multiple bands of small geometric ornaments, including diamonds, rosettes and repeating angular forms. The careful succession of these borders creates a highly structured frame around the composition and emphasizes the extraordinary length and elegance of the piece.

The restrained yet vibrant palette, intricate geometric vocabulary and exceptionally balanced arrangement are characteristic of Shirvan weaving of the late 19th century.
