This remarkable Persian rug was woven in the Melayer region of western Persia (present-day Iran) in the late 19th century. It is a fine example of the distinctive village weaving tradition for which Melayer is particularly renowned.

The rug features an elongated, richly patterned field dominated by a deep madder red ground, densely decorated with an intricate array of small geometric and floral inspired motifs. Rather than relying on a single monumental central medallion, the composition is built around a continuous, allover pattern, creating a highly rhythmic and almost textile-like surface. The abundance of small scale motifs gives the field considerable visual depth and reflects the spontaneous, highly individual character of traditional Melayer weaving.

At either end of the field are distinctive arched, stepped forms, framed by lighter ivory and cream areas and filled with delicate floral and geometric ornament. These elements add a sense of architectural structure to the otherwise densely populated field and create a subtle directional emphasis.

The rug is surrounded by multiple highly decorative borders, with the principal border displaying a continuous sequence of stylized floral, geometric and tribal motifs. The combination of red, rust, indigo, ivory, soft blue and touches of warm brown creates a wonderfully rich and time softened palette, characteristic of finely aged Persian village rugs.

One of the most appealing qualities of this Melayer is its organic irregularity and sophisticated density of design. The motifs are not mechanically repetitive; instead, small variations in drawing, scale and spacing reveal the hand of the weaver and give the rug its individual character.
