Antique Mudjur Prayer Rug

Period: 19th Century
Origin: Mudjur, Anatolia
Dimensions: 123 x 167 cm

This exceptional Mudjur (Mucur) prayer rug, dating to the mid 19th century, is a powerful representative of the rustic and bold weaving traditions of Central Anatolia. Mudjur rugs are highly celebrated by collectors for their saturated natural colors, stepped mihrab arches, and distinctive architectural compositions that reflect the ancient spiritual heritage of the region.

The composition features a prominent stepped Mihrab (prayer arch) in a vibrant madder red, which symbolizes the sacred niche of a mosque. The arch is defined by multiple outlines and set against a deep moss green or indigo field filled with small, protective geometric devices. Above the niche, the spandrels are often decorated with stylized floral motifs or “cloud” patterns, providing a sense of celestial depth. This architectural arrangement underscores the rug’s functional purpose while showcasing the weaver’s mastery of symbolic geometry.

The color palette is classic and vibrant, achieved through the expert use of natural dyes. The rich madder red and deep greens are complemented by soft ivory, ochre, and rare touches of aubergine or turquoise. The high quality, hand spun wool gives these colors a deep luminosity and a sturdy, resilient texture characteristic of authentic mid 19th century Anatolian production.

The design is framed by a grand primary border featuring large scale, stylized blossoms or “S” motifs in alternating colors. These borders are flanked by multiple narrow guard stripes with rhythmic geometric patterns, providing a structured frame that contains the exuberant energy of the central field.

Overall, this mid 19th century Mudjur rug is a masterpiece of Anatolian village artistry. Its powerful symbolic language, vibrant natural colors, and authentic spirit make it a highly coveted work for serious collectors and a stunning addition to any refined interior.
