Antique Tentband Fragment

Period: 19th Century
Origin: Tekke ,Turkmenistan
Dimensions: 30 x 143 cm

This rare 19th century Turkmen Tekke tentband fragment highlights a powerful and rhythmic tribal composition featuring a vertical sequence of archaic geometric “tree of life” motifs rendered in madder red and midnight blue against a pristine ivory field. This structural balance between the stark, minimalist ivory ground and the highly stylized zoomorphic or botanical symbols reflects the pinnacle of the Tekke nomadic weaving tradition. Known as ak chuval or yolami, these long, narrow functional textiles were used to wrap and decorate the interior of the yurt, serving as both structural reinforcement and a display of the weaver’s technical mastery.

The color palette is masterfully balanced featuring a primary ivory ground that serves as a dramatic canvas for high contrast shifts of deep mahogany red and indigo blue. These rich and enduring tones achieved through the expert application of natural dyes exhibit a chromatic strength and a graphic clarity that are hallmarks of the finest 19th century Turkmen productions. The inclusion of side borders decorated with a rhythmic “running dog” or sawtooth pattern in alternating colors creates a precise visual frame that highlights the superior wool quality and distinctive technical finesse of the nomadic weavers.

Structural analysis indicates the use of premium hand-spun local wool with a characteristically fine, flat-woven or mixed-technique foundation and a resilient handle. The exceptional clarity of the angular outlines and the presence of significant abrash within the red and blue sections definitively distinguish this antique masterpiece from later commercial examples or modern reproductions. Ultimately this Tekke tentband fragment stands as a premier example of Central Asian nomadic art representing a peak in both technical endurance and graphic storytelling for global textile collectors and enthusiasts of Turkmen heritage.
