Antique Ushak Carpet
Period: Late 19th century
Origin: Western Anatolia, Ushak, Turkey
Dimension : 300 x 405 cm
This distinguished rug was handwoven in the late 19th century in Ushak, located in the Western Anatolia region of Turkey. During the Ottoman period, Ushak rugs were highly sought after, from the palaces of the empire to the residences of European aristocratic families, admired for their rich color palette, balanced design, and high-quality wool craftsmanship.
The elegant central medallion of the rug stands out in all its glory against the spacious plain field, reflecting the classical aesthetics of Ushak design. The pastel shades of blue, green, and coral red were obtained with natural vegetable dyes, which have softened over time, giving the rug a unique character. The floral motifs adorning the borders add richness and depth to the composition.
Ushak rugs are regarded as works of both decorative and collectible value. This example, with its historical background as well as its aesthetic elegance, is a rare and precious piece.
