Antique Kazak Rug

Period: 1864
Origin: Kazak Region, Caucasus
Dimensions: 157 x 210 cm

This magnificent Kazak rug, dated 1864, is a powerful testament to the bold geometric traditions of the Caucasus region. Kazak rugs are highly prized by collectors for their robust construction, high-quality luminous wool, and iconic, large-scale motifs that convey a sense of architectural strength and tribal identity.

The design is organized around three prominent, multi-layered stepped medallions—two in a rich madder red and a central one in deep indigo—containing nested geometric diamonds and traditional tribal motifs. This central axis is set against a vibrant terracotta red field, which is further anchored by stylized geometric devices, small animal figures, and protective talismans that animate the space. Notably, the rug features a clearly woven date of 1281 (1864 AD), elevating its historical importance as a definitive record of mid-19th century Caucasian production.

The color palette is exceptionally vivid and well-preserved, featuring saturated madder reds, deep indigo blues, and a striking use of fildişi (ivory), gold, and forest green, all traditionally produced using natural dyes. The strong contrast between the cool blue medallions and the fiery red field emphasizes the graphic clarity and tribal spirit of the rug.

The design is enclosed by multiple sophisticated borders, the primary one featuring a repetitive sequence of stylized polychrome rosettes and interlocking blossoms against an ivory ground. These borders are flanked by narrow geometric guard stripes, providing a strong architectural frame that balances the intense energy of the central field and enhances the overall visual impact of the piece.

Overall, this dated 1864 Kazak rug is a masterpiece of Caucasian artistry. Its powerful symbolic language, vibrant natural colors, and masterful execution make it a highly coveted work for serious collectors and a stunning centerpiece for the most refined interiors.
