Antique Bidjar Carpet
Period: Late 19th century
Origin: Northwest Iran
Dimensions: 280 x 385 cm
This late 19th century Bidjar rug is a masterful representation of the “Iron Rugs of Persia,” a title earned through the legendary durability and heavy, double-wefted construction unique to this Kurdish weaving center. These rugs are celebrated for their ability to harmonize formidable structural strength with highly sophisticated, classical floral patterns.
The composition features a commanding midnight blue field, which serves as a deep canvas for a grand, architecturally influenced floral lattice. Large scale palmettes and blossoming shrubs are interconnected by a rhythmic network of angular vines, creating a sense of structured elegance across the entire surface. The palette is rich and authoritative, utilizing saturated tones of madder red, forest green, and gold to articulate the intricate botanical details against the dark ground.
Framing this powerful interior is a series of robust borders that mirror the rug’s substantial character. The wide main border, set against a vibrant red ground, showcases a traditional “Samovar” or “Herati” border design, featuring alternating palmettes and stylized leaves connected by graceful scrolls. Flanked by several narrow guard stripes, this border system provides a refined and formal finish, making this late 19th century piece a timeless example of the technical mastery and artistic depth of Bidjar weavers.
