Antique Caucasian Eagle Rug
Period: Late 19th Century
Origin: Southeast Caucasus
Dimensions: 160 x 230 cm
This late 19th century Caucasian Eagle Kazak rug, often referred to as an “Adler” or Chelaberd Kazak, is a striking example of the bold, geometric tribal art from the Karabakh region. These rugs are famous for their powerful sunburst medallions, which were historically interpreted as stylized eagles with outstretched wings.
The composition features two monumental, multi colored sunburst medallions that dominate the rich madder red field. Each medallion radiates with jagged, ivory and blue rays, creating a sense of explosive energy and symmetry. Small tribal motifs and geometric shapes are scattered throughout the remaining field, adding to the rug’s primitive charm without distracting from the central icons.
The border system provides a crisp frame for the vibrant interior, featuring a classic ivory ground decorated with a repeating series of stylized rosettes and geometric “leaf and wine glass” patterns. The use of high quality natural dyes and thick, lustrous wool gives this piece the rugged durability and visual depth characteristic of high status Caucasian nomadic weavings from the late 19th century.
