Antique Bergama Bag
Period: Mid 19th Century
Origin: West Anatolia
Dimensions: 44 x 42 cm
This rare, mid 19th century Bergama bag face is an extraordinary and deeply charming relic of western Anatolian tribal weaving, originating from the historic district of Bergama, a region celebrated for its robust weaving traditions dating back to the Ottoman era. Originally woven as part of a double saddlebag or precious storage sack, this hand knotted wool piece is characterized by its exceptionally thick, plush pile, lustrous hand spun wool, and an incredibly vivid palette achieved through historic organic dye recipes. The central composition features a brilliant sapphire blue field that frames an enchanting architectural or landscape motif, showcasing a row of highly stylized, house like structures and sacred cypress trees that traditionally symbolize settlement, lineage, and eternal life.
The whimsical yet highly structured central layout is further animated by small geometric blossoms, stylized animals, and protective charms floating playfully around the main icons. This lively scene is framed by an intricately detailed madder red main border filled with continuous geometric florets, which is beautifully flanked by wide cream colored upper and lower panels adorned with repeating tribal amulets and traditional comb motifs to ward off the evil eye. The outer edges preserve the authentic kelim flat weave aprons at the top and bottom, showcasing the rich terracotta red transitions that directly reflect the piece’s utilitarian nomadic heritage and dowry commission quality.
Exhibiting a wonderfully thick and healthy pile condition, a soft authentic patina, and remarkable natural abrash variations where the vegetable dyes have matured beautifully over nearly two centuries, this historic Anatolian textile carries a profound artistic soul. The harmonious aging of the vibrant reds, deep forest greens, crisp ivory, and rich blues gives the entire composition a glowing, folk art quality that feels both timeless and expressive. It stands as a highly unique, museum quality example of Bergama village craftsmanship, offering an incredible graphic presence and warmth to dedicated tribal textile collections, or serving as a captivating, narrative driven display piece for sophisticated modern walls and interiors.
