Kayseri Silk Carpet
Period: Mid 20th Century
Origin: Kayseri, Turkey
Dimensions: 211 x 317 cm
This mid 20th century Kayseri rug is a beautiful example of the fine weaving traditions from Central Anatolia. Kayseri has long been a major center for rug production, known for creating elegant pieces that often draw inspiration from classical Persian floral designs, reinterpreting them with a distinct Turkish aesthetic.
The composition features a large, ornate central medallion with eight radiating points, set against a delicate cream ground. Intricate floral vines and scrolling leaf patterns fill the entire field, creating a dense but balanced “garden” effect. The palette is exceptionally soft and harmonious, utilizing shades of sky blue, tan, and soft gold that give the rug a light, luminous quality.
A sophisticated border system frames the central field, led by a wide main border on a light blue ground. This border is decorated with a rhythmic series of stylized palmettes and interlocking floral motifs, flanked by several narrower guard stripes. The high level of detail and the subtle color transitions demonstrate the technical skill of Kayseri weavers in the 20th century, resulting in a piece that is both decorative and traditionally rooted.
