Antique Karapınar Rug

Period: 18th Century
Origin: Karapınar, Turkey
Dimensions: 123 x 175 cm

This monumental Karapınar rug, dating to the 18th century, is a rare and historically significant survivor from the Central Anatolian weaving tradition. Karapınar rugs are highly regarded by collectors for their bold, archaic designs, exceptional wool quality, and a color palette that reflects the ancient heritage of the region.

The design is organized around a grand, multi-layered hexagonal medallion in a deep madder red, featuring a prominent central cruciform motif and nested geometric shapes. This centerpiece is set against a vibrant honey-gold field, which is elegantly framed by angular, stepped corner spandrels in a contrasting fildişi (ivory). The spacious arrangement of the motifs and the confident, large-scale draftsmanship reflect the high-level village workshop standards of the 18th century, where traditional Anatolian symbols were rendered with an architectural sense of balance and power.

The color palette is remarkably well-preserved for its age, featuring saturated madder reds, brilliant golden yellows, and touches of indigo blue and forest green, all traditionally achieved through the master use of natural dyes. The vibrant contrast between the golden field and the warm red tones emphasizes the graphic clarity and enduring aesthetic appeal of the piece.

The composition is enclosed by multiple sophisticated borders, the primary one featuring a repeating sequence of stylized floral rosettes and large-scale geometric palmettes. These borders provide a grand frame that balances the expansive energy of the central field and contributes to the overall visual majesty of the piece.

Overall, this 18th century Karapınar rug is an evocative document of textile history. Its powerful motifs, classical proportions, and masterful execution make it an invaluable piece for serious collectors, offering a glimpse into the majestic artistry of the early Ottoman period.
